David Scher brings new talent into his brokerage by recruiting business-savvy college interns from Boston-area universities. The interns receive course credit and real-world experience — a mutually beneficial arrangement that reflects his belief in investing in the next generation of real estate professionals.

School of Hard Knocks

Scher got his start in a similar way, earning his license at 18 and working his way through college at four different companies before opening his own brokerage in June 2005. He passes on to the interns the hard lessons he learned in the early years.

Scher closed $9.5 million in sales in the year leading up to his recognition — a remarkable achievement for a broker who had only recently opened his own firm.

The IT Factor

Technology was central to Scher's approach from the very beginning. A full-time information technology staffer — who himself got his start as an intern — set up a customized system to feed listings from the MLS to approximately 20 different real estate websites that Scher maintained.

Scher also participated in MLSs in four other states in order to help clients market homes across the overlapping New England markets — a forward-thinking multi-state strategy that foreshadows the dual MA/NH focus Cornwall Realty maintains today.
